How Negative Reviews Can Actually Help You

Home

After the book cover catches my eye, I'll read the description and if it sounds interesting, I'll scroll down to read the reviews. I look for books with mixed 4-5 stars and 1-2 stars. Because that means I'll either be in the group that loves it or hates it. :)

I don't want to read books I feel meh about. So most books I love have 3 stars total, but don't have any 3 star reviews.

Personally, a book with no negative reviews is lower on my TBR list then one with mixed reviews. Why? Because 75% of good reviews consist of squeeing and emojis, whereas 75% of negative reviews have details.

While reading the negative reviews, I'll look for keywords for things I like in fiction. One reviewer said they didn't like telepathic dragons, but that sold me on the book. Another reviewer said the characters were spending the whole book being sassy and witty while saving the world, which led to another sale.

I also keep an eye out for things that I don't like. For example, one reviewer said a book contained graphic descriptions of violence. This one negative review actually is helping the author by turning away people who aren't a good fit for their book therefore saving them from other negative reviews about that aspect.

So don't sweat it if your book is getting negative reviews about personal perferences or taste, they might just be helping you make sales!
