#WIPJoy: Share A Line That Surprised You

Tales From Crigmis

Another day, another #WIPJoy challenge. Time to share a line from the Rise Of The Shadow Lord that surprised me. I wrote a scene where the Animalian Exile Awesome Possum spent the night in a captured village.

When he woke up the next morning, he forgot most of what had happened the day before, so he expected the worst. I thought the most disarming thing I could throw at him was a little boy missing his father. To my surprise, no matter how I tried to write Awesome Possum's walking away without doing something, it just didn't fit.

Awesome Possum paused in the doorway. He had to know. “Is his fathko still alive?”

The woman’s hand trembled and she would not meet his eye. “I don’t… I don’t know. Jev’ar. He tried… to fight during the invasion and he was thrown into a pit somewhere in the clearing.”

So this is what the Creator asked in return for making the Animalians believe the Coon's lies. He rubbed his face. Well, a promise was a promise. “I will see what I can do.”

The man in the fedora ransacked the master bedroom with all of the caution of a master thief.

He could imagine the headlines when the press caught wind of the biggest caper of the century; 'With nothing more than a glance shared between strangers, the valuables and the suspects vanished.' Read more
