MG Fantasy Book Review: Redwall by Brian Jacques

Book Reviews

I picked up this book thanks to the suggestion of a friend. I want to read more classic fantasy novels and my friend thought it would be a good fit.

I purchase the book during a sale at my favorite bookstore, which sadly has closed since then. When I got back home, I found that the book was actually signed by the author! :D

Redwall tells the story of the mouse, Matthias, and how he rises to the occasion when the horrible, infamous rat warlord, Cluny the Scourge, attacks his home, Redwall Abby.It had a bit of a slow start, but after the first five chapters, the story was non-stop action. Filled with cunning heroes, interesting allies, and many different challenges to overcome, Redwall ranks up there with Narnia in my opinion, it is a delightful fantasy novel that everyone should read at least once. I loved all the colorful characters, the badass Constance the Badger, the demented Basil Stag Hare, the honorable Warbeak and the terrifying Asmodeus.

The villains were truly evil and the heroes boldly good, which is kind of refreshing after all the books with grey heroes and sympathetic villains.

This book has scenes of war, characters deaths, and scenes which might scare someone under ten.  I took one book of my to-read pile and added twenty-one sequels. ;)
